Spring ‘04
Architectural Wood is involved with, or has recently completed a number of interesting commercial woodworking projects. Included among them is the renovation of DC Superior Courts. Architectural Wood was chosen for this critical work partly because of our reputation for quality. Our efforts on this project include the four elements of a successful woodworking project: expert fabrication and joinery, factory finishing, qualified licensed installation, and tedious project management. The DC Superior Court building is located in downtown Washington, DC. Architectural Wood has recently completed a major renovation of several courtrooms. The structure has classic detailing which required careful woodworking expertise. Special full-height wall pilasters incorporated mahogany veneers, which were carefully selected, then matched to the existing woodwork. In addition, we painstakingly replicated the historic detailing in the existing judge’s bench and surrounding fixtures to create a uniform appearance between the new and old woodwork. Contractor: Joint venture: DALCO & Tingey Construction.
Cassell Coliseum, Virginia Tech. The entrance of this university sports coliseum was recently upgraded with new concessions and decorative wall panels. Rotary Birch veneers comprise a series of panels and angled archways. Integrated into this was the “Hokie Stone” which is a prevalent theme throughout the campus. In addition, at the termination of each corridor were special media walls designed to keep spectators informed while away from their seats. This particular project was awarded Award of Excellence by the Architectural Woodwork Institute and is featured in the 85
Spring issue of Design Solutions magazine. Contractor: Virginia Tech.
U.S. State Department, Washington, DC: Small in size, this highly important project lead to work within the State Department Building. Special security clearances were required to produce work for the staff of the Secretary of State. Custom plastic laminated office casework and wood veneer half-height perimeter walls were incorporated into this 2003 renovation. Contractor: DALCO.
As this piece is being written, we are currently building a special one-of-a-kind trophy case, which will house the U.S. Open Golf trophy cup at the Congressional Country Club. This small, intricate red-oak focal point requires special hand-carved detailing and intense coordination. It should be completed by May of 2004. Contractor: Congressional Country Club.
We have built woodwork for several banks and credit unions recently. In addition, other woodworking firms contact us to help supplement their production when it exceeds their capacity and we often sub-contract projects for them. We find this type of work to be challenging as we are exposed to projects well outside our own region. Other recent projects have required the installation of marble, granite, metals, plastics, and glass, as part of the woodwork package: A good example is the information desk at Roanoke’s Center in the Square, which was also featured in Design Solutions Magazine.
All our key personnel have years of experience in architectural woodwork. We are members of the Architectural Woodwork Institute.
In May 1996 - Architectural Wood was the first Virginia firm to be certified under the AWI Quality Certification Program - Premium Grade!
